BHȂRATA VARSHA, The Ancient Expansive India that was > 2500 years ago
Brahmāṇḍa Purāṇa was composed before 400 BCE. That is, >2500 years ago. In this great and enormous Purana, there are some details that may interest you. In the chapter on Bhārata, there are some interesting observations.
This is an exhaustive description of the land called Bhārata Varsha in those days. [Varsha could mean a continent].
1. Nine divisions by Sea:
भारतस्यास्य वर्षस्य नव भेदान्निबोधत
समुद्रान्तरिता ज्ञेयाः ते त्वगम्याः परस्परम् । १.१५.८। ।
Know that the Varsha called Bhārata is divided into nine parts. They are all surrounded by the ocean and difficult to go from one to another.
These nine “islands” of the Varsha or continent called Bhārata are: Sri Lanka, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Maldives, Japan, Brunei Darussalem, East Timor and Taiwan.
2. DIFFERENT RACES IN THE NORTH-WEST BHȂRATA
The different races of the north western parts of India.
बाह्लीकाः वाटधानाश्च आभीराः कालतोयकाः
अपराण्ताश्च सुह्याश्च पाञ्चलाः च चर्ममण्डलाः
गांधाराः यवनाश्चैव सिंधु-सौवीर-मण्डलाः
चीनाश्चैव तुषाराश्च पल्लवाः गिरिगह्वराः । । १.१५.४६,४७। ।
शकाः भद्राः कुलिंदाश्च पारदा विन्ध्यचूलिकाः
अभीषाहा उलूताश्च केकया दशमालिकाः ।१.१५.४८।।
Bāhlika = Present-day Baluchistanis [Bolon, Nohi and Gokh rivers]
Vātadhāna = Waziristan now
Ȃbhîrā = South of Sauvira, East of Indus, Hyderabad before Independence
Kālatoyaka = People of Kalāt in Baluchistan today
Carma-mandala = Near River Hub
Gandhara = Khandahar [Kabul valley]
Yavana = Ionians, or Greeks
Sindhu-Sauvira = the present Baltistan region
Tuṣāra = Tocharians [Tarim Basin]
Kulinda = Kulu people
Pallava = Pahlava [Iranian people] Yudhishtira might have conquered Iranduring Rajasuya. Because Pahlava is mentioned several times in Mahabharata
Kamboja = Iranian Kamboja tribes
Kekaya = People living between Gandhar and Beas River
[Friends, from such a vast Bhārata Varsha, today we are so small. And brimming with population,and fake population for political power. So unfortunate!]
